But, their physical conformation makes natural bulldog breeding difficult and risky. Reproduction endangers them more than most other breeds. Thus our advice to people planning to breed their dogs, is to always set aside some funds for emergencies. Some dogs can take up to eighteen months until their cycle becomes regular.
Once it does, the average is about every six months. Smaller breeds may go into heat more frequently, as often as times a year. Their head has been bred to become larger over the years, and as a result these dogs cannot birth them naturally through the pelvic canal. Male dogs can breed as young as months though it is recommended that you wait until they are mature in mind and body which at a minimum I would say is months old. The AKC will not recognize a sired from a male that is under 7 months of age or over 12 years old unless special documentation is provided.
Many French Bulldog stud dogs are incapable of naturally breeding. Here are the typical steps involved:. A male bulldog in the presence of a female in heat will likely try to mount her. At this point, she is ready for mounting. As the female continues to stand still and the male has had a good whiff of her scent, he will mount her from behind. While mounted, the male bulldog will try to find the vulva. Because of the shape of their bodies, the males have a hard time finding and entering the vulva.
In most cases, this part of the bulldog mating process will need human intervention. Once the male is able to enter the female, he will start thrusting. The male will continue to thrust into the female until he ejaculates. Some time after ejaculation, the male will turn from the mount. You will notice that the dogs lock together from their rear ends. But, this process helps ensure that the semen stays inside the female. In turn, that ensures a good chance of fertilization. This swelling keeps him essentially stuck inside the female.
The tie ends when the swelling of bulbus glandis subsides. This takes an average of 15 minutes. Some last as short as 5 minutes while some take as much as 30 minutes. At this point, the sperm is safely deposited into the female who may soon be pregnant.
Bulldogs were bred to carry most of their weight in their forefront. When a male mounts a female, she will have to support most of his weight around her hips. Depending on how long it takes, the female might not be strong enough to support it. At best, this could lead to unsuccessful mating. At worst, it could lead to a serious injury. Bulldogs are quick to overheat, even in normal circumstances.
The mating process involves additional excitement, stress, and extraordinary physical exertion. All that could easily lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Apart from overheating, the entire mating process could lead to excess anxiety.
