Sharon Indian School. As part of the Powhatan chiefdom, Upper Mattaponi descendants played a fundamental role in the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. In , the August Hermann Map shows several Indian houses along the Upper Mattaponi River directly at the location of the Upper Mattaponi people, identifying the region as Indian land.
They were not there long. I have searched my family for names, dates and places but have not found any solid documentation of indian heritage. I have been told that my grandmother was Mattaponi and I have found a woman named Goodman listed as Powhatan.
I would like to know more. I am involved with organizing an inter tribal powwow in Southeastern Ohio and would like to know more definite information on my own heritage. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to invite anyone interested to visit our powwow. July 2 and 3, in Sardis, Ohio. Look for Monroe Powwow on Facebook for more information. Thank you.

The peace treaty concluding that war established a tradition of paying yearly tribute to the Virginia governor that, after being reestablished in , continued into the twenty-first century. The fourth Wednesday of November is set aside for presentations of fish and game at the State Capitol or Executive Mansion in Richmond. The treaty also set aside land for the Mattaponi along the Rappahannock River. In , an act of the General Assembly established the Mattaponi Reservation on the western banks of the Mattaponi River.
In , Nathaniel Bacon and his rebels attacked the Mattaponi and other Indians groups, forcing them to retreat to the Dragon Swamp in Gloucester County and killing the tribe's chief, Yau-na-hah. Sometime after the rebellion ended in , and the Pamunkey chief Cockacoeske signed the Treaty of Middle Plantation , Yau-na-hah's eldest son, Mahayough, led the Mattaponi back to their reservation.
The Mattaponi had returned back to the Mattaponi River and its wetlands by They built a new town downstream of modern Walkerton. The Chickahominy built a town nearby, creating an island of "Indian country" surrounded by colonists' farms. The Rappahannock and Morattico stayed on the ridge above Piscataway Creek until , when local officials moved the Rappahannock perhaps including the Marattico by then to Portobago.
During Bacon's Rebellion in , the Mattaponi were attacked by the rebels. Chief Yau-na-hah was killed, and the tribe retreated into Dragon Swamp at the headwaters of the Piankatank River. Under leadership of Yau-na-hah's son Mahayough, they returned to their town on the Mattaponi River at the end of the rebellion; the move into Dragon Run was a temporary escape, not a permanent relocation.
The Treaty of Middle Plantation was signed by the English and various "tributary" tribes in Virginia, but had no effect on rival groups outside of Virginia. In , the Iroquoian-speaking Seneca raided south from New York and pushed the Mattaponi out of their town again. The Mattaponi and next-door Chickahominy relocated to the Pamunkey Neck area, briefly living with the Pamunkey tribe before returning back to the Mattaponi River.
For the next two centuries, Virginia and local officials dealt with the Mattaponi and Pamunkey jointly. The tribe re-established its separate identity in when it negotiated creation of a separate reservation at the end of Indian Town Road between Indian Town Swamp and the Mattaponi River. The legislature also appointed white trustees to handle legal matters, comparable to the trustees appointed for the Pamunkey since The division of the old Pamunkey Reservation allocated to the Mattaponi tribe a acre property on the Mattaponi River, eight miles away from Pamunkey Neck.
In contrast, the Pamunkey Reservation consisted of 1, acres.
